I’ve been hitting the trails around College Station and beyond, and recently upgraded to the Bell 4Forty MIPS helmet. If you’re looking for a solid all-mountain lid that doesn’t break the bank but still packs premium features, this one’s a winner.
Right off the bat, the MIPS Evolve system is integrated seamlessly (no bulky feel), which helps reduce rotational forces in a crash—peace of mind without extra weight or hassle. It has extended rear coverage and a full hard shell for that extra bit of protection on rough descents or accidental dabs into trees.
Comfort is where it really shines. The Float Fit retention system dials in a secure, customizable fit with an easy rear dial, and the built-in Sweat Guide keeps moisture from dripping into your eyes during those humid Texas rides. With 15 vents, airflow is decent for an all-conditions helmet, though it can warm up a bit on slow climbs (not a deal-breaker for most trail riding).
At around 360g (medium size), it’s lightweight enough to forget you’re wearing it after a few minutes. The adjustable visor works great with goggles, and the overall build feels durable—Bell’s in-mold construction holds up well.
